Made in the USA, the First Navy Jack is made of 200 denier nylon and holds up in all kinds of weather. Canvas header and brass grommets. The First Navy Jack flag was flown on the masts of America’s first Continental Navy, in the Autumn of 1775. The Commander of the Navy, Commodore Esek Hopkins issued a set of fleet signals instructing his vessels to fly the Sons of Liberty Flag with the uncoiled snake. The nine red and white stripes symbolized the nine original colonies, and the rattlesnake symbolized America’s resistance to the British. It had been Britain’s practice at the time to send their convicted criminals to America, so Ben Franklin suggested we should send rattlesnakes back to Britain. “Don’t tread on me” refers to America’s willingness to strike if its independence was infringed upon. Even today, the First Navy Jack is currently being flown on the aircraft carriers USS Kitty Hawk and USS Enterprise. NOTICE: Effective 9-11-02, all US Naval ships raised this flag in lieu of the U.S. Jack to honor the victims of 9-11-01. They will continue to fly this flag until the war on terrorism is won !

I fly this flag from the mast of my Hobie Cat as I sail around the bay of Green Bay. Just like the snake, I''ll strike if you try to tread on my independence!
