Fixed Blade Knives: Case & Sons
W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company was created in 1905, during a time when pocketknives were as essential as a watch. Throughout the years, the company has been recognized as a leader in pioneering new materials and designs in the knife industry. Case does things the “old school” way, but in a good way. Sure, there is a lot to be said about high-tech this and tactical that, but at Case, they make knives the same way they
did over a hundred years ago: with pride and by hand. Case doesn’t compete to make high quantity, cheap, plastic junk. Their niche is timeless quality. They know that each knife that ships from the company is built to last forever. Often longer than its original owner’s grandson, to whom it’s been passed down as an heirloom.
The company’s roots extend back to 1889, when a few enterprising brothers – William Russell (W.R.), Jean, John and Andrew Case – began selling cutlery from the back of a covered wagon in Little Valley, New York where the company would eventually be based for decades, before relocating to its current home: Bradford, Pennsylvania. In January of 1900, the family incorporated to form the first Case brand, Case Brothers Cutlery Company.
Case knives are made with blades stamped from the finest domestic stainless steel, and hardened using specialized heat treatment methods. Knife handles are also shaped by skilled Case artisans’ hands, using a variety of natural materials, and secured to the full tang blade with either brass or nickel. There is no plastic at all on a Case knife. You can tell that a Case knife is a high quality cutlery specimen, and a breed unto itself, just by looking at it. Once you pick it up, you realize that you are holding a knife that has achieved the quintessential epitome of its intended function.
Case knives, entirely handcrafted in the United States,
with blades forged of American steel, are some of the sharpest and highest quality knives on the planet. Along with Winchester and Colt, baseball and apple pie, Case knives are an American legend: quality in its most pure and simple form.
